In 1974 Assistant Camera Operator Jay Isbell, Helicopter Pilot
George Graham, and Cinematographer Rick Stevens founded Air-Mobile Productions, Inc. At that
time Air-Mobile was an aerial production
company based in Birmingham, Alabama. Unfortunately, the move into aerial production proved to be
about ten years ahead of its time.
When location video tape became practical two years later, the company began to weigh the high
maintainence cost of their helicopter against the income it generated and the obvious markets
opening up to mobile production companies around the country. In 1976 Air-Mobile introduced the
first commercial mobile video unit in Alabama. While the helicopter continued to draw crowds when
it was used, it was finally retired in 1978.
As the demand for higher and higher quality video continued, the mobile unit was expanded to
include a high-band Quad video recorder in 1978 and further still to multiple 1" machines in
1980. At about the same time, the company moved into a permanent facility with a large studio
south of Birmingham. As with the helicopter, in 1983 the multi-camera truck became history as
studio production became the mainstay.
Air-Mobile's operation grew and the building was expanded. As a part of the expansion a full
service audio recording studio was added under the direction of Tom Petras. One of the first
clients to make use of this new direction was Feld Entertainment, Inc. Feld Entertainment is
the producer of Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus and a host of Ice and Stage shows
around the world. It is this continuing relationship with Feld that has become the governing
factor in the operations of Air-Mobile. In the past fourteen years, the company's leading-edge
development has kept pace with the multi-national requirements of our industry in general,
and Feld's needs in particular.
Over the years, as capable production companies began to emerge in all of the major cities,
post production became our main business. In the fall of 1995, Air-Mobile moved to a new and
very modern facility on Interstate 459 south of Birmingham. This has greatly expanded our
ability to serve our local clients as well as access the overnight freight services used
every day for our national and international operations. The move also aided in re-wiring
the facility as digital non-linear formats have become our primary operating medium for
post production.
Now Air-Mobile is expanding once again. With this expansion we are moving into providing
highly secure internet hosting services to the Bessemer / Birmingham area. As we grow in this
area we intend to continue building
our web page design and authoring services. To see pages we are already working on, please
